Wisdom teeth removal in East Tucson

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, right at the back of the jaw. Not every wisdom tooth causes a problem. Where one does, crowding, infection or damage past repair are the reasons that come up — and removal is one answer to that, not the only one.

Is This You

The reasons this comes up

A dentist is not hunting for teeth to take out. These are the situations where the question gets asked in the first place.

01

There is no room left at the back of my mouth

Where the jaw has no space for it, a tooth may never come through the gum properly. Crowding is one of the ordinary reasons removal comes up.

02

My orthodontist says a tooth has to come out before treatment starts

Straightening teeth needs somewhere for them to move to. Where a jaw is crowded, an orthodontic plan sometimes starts with a tooth coming out.

03

A back tooth broke and there is not much of it left

Decay or an injury can take a tooth past the point where it can be repaired. When repair is no longer realistic, removal is the alternative.

04

The ache is deep and it keeps me awake

A deep ache can mean decay has reached the pulp at the core of the tooth, with infection behind it. Some of those teeth can be treated and kept. Some are too far gone.

05

The gums round my back teeth are bad and the teeth feel loose

Periodontal disease is an infection in the gum and bone that hold a tooth in place. Where a tooth has lost that support, taking it out may become necessary.

06

I am starting chemotherapy and I have been told to get my teeth looked at

When the immune system is weakened, by cancer treatment or ahead of a transplant, a tooth that might only possibly become infected is judged differently. The risk on its own may be reason enough to remove a tooth.

The Options

What the terms mean

The words that come up in this conversation, in plain English.

Extraction

The general word for taking a tooth out — any tooth, not only a wisdom tooth. It is worth being clear that this does not reverse: once a tooth is out, it is out.

Before Anything Begins

Nothing is decided before it is seen.

The consultation comes first, whatever you are here about. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

A 3D scan The consultation includes a scan, so a plan is drawn from what is actually there rather than from a guess.
A written plan You leave with it on paper, including the cost, and decide in your own time. Nothing is treated on the day.

The Money Part

A free consultation before anything is decided

The consultation is free and there is no obligation. You leave with the cost in writing before anything is booked, so the decision is yours to make away from the chair.

If a plan turns out not to be for you, that is a perfectly good outcome of a consultation.

Quick Questions

The things people ask first.

If yours isn’t here, the consultation is the place for it — or call and ask.

of 05 open

No. Removal is sometimes necessary and it is not automatic. A dentist assesses where each tooth sits, whether there is space for it, and whether it is doing any damage — and leaving it alone is a real answer, not a delay.

Position is a question a dentist answers with imaging rather than by looking. The free consultation here includes a 3D scan, and you leave with the plan written down.

It depends how much sound tooth is left and how far the infection has travelled. Decay that reaches the pulp can sometimes be treated with the tooth kept. A tooth broken past repair is a different case, and keeping it may not be an option. The assessment comes before the decision.

Healing takes time and it varies from one person to the next. No one can put a figure on that in advance, and a page that puts a number on it is guessing. Ask what your own recovery is likely to involve, and who to call if something is not right.

Pain is not the only signal. Crowding, a stuck tooth and gum infection are each judged on what they are doing, not only on how they feel. The question a dentist is answering is whether a tooth is causing a problem, not only whether it hurts.
